gradma's beef stew
50
mL (1/4 c.) Western Family All-Purpose Flour
2 mL (1/2 tsp.) salt
2 mL (1/2 tsp.) pepper
750g (1 1/2 lb.) stewing beef, cubed
25 mL (2 tbsp.) vegetable oil
2 medium onions, sliced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 can (10 fl. oz./284 mL) Beef Broth
15 mL (1 tbsp.) Worcestershire Sauce
2 mL (1/2 tsp.) thyme
2 bay leaves
500 mL (2 c.) tomato juice
500 mL (2 c.) water
4 carrots, peeled and sliced
1 turnip, peeled and cubed
3 celery stalks, 1" pieces
6 potatoes, peeled and diced
flour and water for thickening

In a plastic bag, combine flour, salt and pepper. Drop beef into bag and
shake to dredge cubes.

In a large heavy skillet over medium heat, add meat, onions and garlic
and brown.

Add all other ingredients except the vegetables. Reduce heat and simmer,
covered, for 1 to 2 hours or until tender.

Add raw vegetables. Continue to simmer until vegetables are tender. About
1 hour. Remove bay leaves. Thicken with flour and water.
